SPANDA stands postponed.
A dance and movement retreat especially designed for those who want to move, breathe, and feel alive again.
Spanda is not a festival or a performance.
It’s five days away from noise, away from deadlines, away from the roles we play every day—to find what moves us inside.
We will dance, sit in silence, move with the wind, share meals, and listen to each other’s stories. No stage lights, no applause—just space to reconnect with ourselves.
At Spanda Shakti, our mission is simple — to create a space where movement is more than performance, and art is more than an audience.

We believe in dance as a pathway to self-discovery, a language for healing, and a bridge between people from every walk of life.
Through this retreat, we bring together seasoned artists, curious beginners, and young dancers from underserved communities to share the same floor, the same meals, and the same conversations.
Here, there are no hierarchies—only shared humanity and the quiet joy of moving together.
Spanda Shakti takes place in the quiet embrace of the Himalayan foothills—far from the noise, close to the sky.

It’s the kind of place where mornings open with birdsong, afternoons invite slow walks, and evenings feel like they are made for reflection.
Nature becomes part of our practice here—the hills holding our silences, the wind carrying our movements.
Each year, we choose a setting that offers the same essentials: fresh air, open spaces, and a sense of being gently removed from the rush of daily life.
We don’t promise marble lobbies or gold-plated taps—we promise spaces that let you breathe.
Where you stay at Spanda Shakti will always have:
A globally acclaimed choreographer and performer, Tanusree Shankar is the torchbearer of the Uday Shankar style of Indian contemporary dance. Her work blends Indian classical, folk, and contemporary traditions, creating a language of movement that is as rooted in heritage as it is alive in the present moment.
As the Principal and Artistic Director of the Tanusree Shankar Dance Company, she has reimagined movement as storytelling, healing, and education.
At Spanda Shakti, Shankar will lead masterclasses, guide creative explorations, and share the philosophy that has shaped her life’s work.
When I first dreamt of Spanda, I wasn’t thinking of creating an event.
I was thinking of creating space—the kind of space we rarely give ourselves.
My own roots are steeped in the artistic and spiritual legacy of my grand-uncle Paramhansa Yogananda and Uday Shankar’s philosophy of dance as life.
I have seen how movement can heal, how art can connect strangers, and how stillness can transform the way we live.
But in today’s world, art often becomes performance alone—bound to stages, ticket sales, and applause. I wanted something different.
A retreat where we could step away from noise, from our roles, and from the constant demand to be ”on”—and instead move, breathe, and listen.
Spanda Shakti is that space.
Five days in the Himalayan foothills, where movement becomes meditation, where strangers become a community, and where every participant—whether a trained dancer or a curious beginner—finds their own rhythm.
Most importantly, this is not just for those who can afford it. We have opened our doors to young dancers from rural and economically challenged backgrounds so they can learn, create, and dream alongside everyone else. Because art is for all of us.
If you feel called to move, to slow down, to reconnect with yourself—I welcome you to join us.
